If your building has a limited amount of space, you will need to consider which sliding door system is going to be best for your passive fire protection needs.
When Sliding Doors Are Most Appropriate
When working with limited spaces, it can quickly become apparent that traditional side hung/hinged fire doors or double action fire doors are not a viable option. These doors can be too large for smaller spaces and may not perform appropriately, thereby making them ineffective fire protection solutions.
As such, sliding fire doors may be the best option in order to meet the required building code regulations (AS 1905.1-2005).
- Sliding fire doors are most often installed using an overhead track system that utilises pulleys and weights; motion or optical sensors can also be installed if automatic operation is needed (such as in many public buildings, like shopping centres or hospitals)
- Sliding fire doors and frames can be customised to suit the size of your space and they can be reduced in size if your space is limited
- A sliding fire door can be manufactured to suit a range of fire resistant levels; for example, they can be installed as a 1 hour door or a 4 hour door
- You can also opt from a range of sliding door materials to suit your specific project, including glass, timber or metal glass fibre, steel or aluminium
What Kind of Sliding Fire Door Should You Choose?
The type of sliding door that will be right for you will depend on the desired functionality of your door, the specific size of your space and the door performance you require in the event of a fire hazard or emergency.
Sliding fire doors can work based on a range of sliding systems and can be included into your build as:
- Single leaf sliding doors – These may be most ideal for building with limited entryway space or that require fire doors to be installed in tight corridors
- Double or bi-parting sliding doors – These fire doors are ideal for doors and passageways that may be larger, but that still have limited space and cannot incorporate hinged doors
- Parallel or triple sliding doors – Parallel or triple sliding doors are excellent solutions if you are facing a lack of space, since these doors can act as a makeshift wall or divider in the space. Parallel/triple sliding doors are also frequently made of glass/glass fibre in order to enlarge the look of the space and maximise the flow of light throughout
- Horizontal or overhead sliding doors – These types of doors are best for buildings with a wide span egress where side hung doors are not practical; horizontal doors can be operated manually, automatically or via remote control and can also be fitted with wicket doors if required
- It is quite common for a building project to utilise a combination of the above sliding door options depending on the fire protection needs and the size of each individual space.
- Automatic Door-Holding Devices – As per the Australian building code (C3.6), all sliding fire doors must be fitted with electro-magnetic devices that have the ability to automatically close in the event of an emergency, to prevent the spread of fire, smoke or other dangers.
