Special Purpose Doors For Retail: 4 Types That You Should Consider

Retail spaces may require special purpose doors to suit different needs. These include fire doors, security doors and more.

Retail buildings, from big to small, may require a range of different special purpose doors to suit their needs. Everything from fire safety to protection from forced entry and other attacks may need to be taken under consideration. Here at FSE, we supply an extensive range of doors for retail spaces of all kinds. Here are some that you may want to consider.

Retail Fire Doors

In Australia, there are very strict regulations surrounding fire safety in retail spaces, and fire doors are an important component of adhering to them. Retail fire doors – also known as a fire-rated door set – work to stop fire and smoke from spreading quickly throughout a building and making their way into isolated areas like fire exits and corridors where people could become trapped. In a nutshell, fire doors save lives.

Fire doors consist of the door leaf, frame and associated hardware. All of these elements must be rigorously tested in accordance with the Building Code of Australia (i.e. AS1530.4) to achieve their fire rating.

At FSE Special Purpose Doors, all of our fire doors meet the highest safety standard. We manufacture a range of fire doors to suit all kinds of commercial buildings.

Sliding fire doors – Sliding fire doors are well suited to larger spaces where spacious entry and exit points are needed in case of fire.
Hinged fire doors – These doors are designed and engineered for heavy-duty use and offer higher performance levels of security, longevity and sound attenuation.
Swinging fire doors – Swinging double action fire doors are useful in spaces where corridors experience heavy foot traffic. They swing at 180-degrees, allowing traffic to flow back and forth easily.
Glass fire doors – Glass fire doors are popular in modern buildings. They are manufactured with a fire rated glazing and adhere to the BCA’s fire resistance requirements.

Security Doors

There are a variety of security doors available to suit a wide range of commercial and residential needs. We specialise in heavy duty ballistic doors, which are specially configured to withstand a range of attack levels, including forced entry and projectile or blast penetration.

They may be suitable in retail spaces where large amounts of money or valuable items are held, such as service stations, ticketing agencies, and pawnbrokers. These kinds of doors are extremely adaptable and can be aesthetically tailored to suit many types of designs and finishes so that they integrate effortlessly with walls, panels and overall design themes, allowing them to fulfil their function, but without giving away their ultimate purpose.

Solid Core Doors

Standard solid core doors are well suited to retail settings. Made of composite wood, they can be painted to suit the aesthetic of any space. They also offer soundproofing and insulative properties, as well as higher levels of security than standard door types.

This special purpose door can be manufactured as a traditional pine blockboard core and a moisture resistant particleboard core. Solid core doors are available in various finishes such as MDF, pre-primed hardboard, plywood and metal facings. They can also be fitted with accessories to suit any retail space.

Heritage Doors for Retail Buildings

Some retail spaces are located in a heritage listed buildings. As important as these heritage preservation orders are, they can prove difficult for designers and builders in retaining the original building features whilst meeting current safety regulations.

Heritage door upgrades refer to the process of upgrading the doors in heritage buildings to meet the current fire resistant ratings set by the BCA (AS1530.4).

This process may involve upgrading hardware (heritage-style hardware can be purchased to ensure the upgrade maintains the existing design and period of the door), dismantling the door so that concealed adjustments and proofing can be carried out, or even replacing the doors altogether.

FSE Special Purpose Doors work with many retail clients to design, manufacture and install doors.
