Eco Friendly Green Star Fire Doors

We take a look at environmentally friendly fire doors – what they are, why you should choose them, and some tips for working with Green Star Fire Doors.

Fire doors come in all shapes and sizes. They are available in a range of materials and finishes and with various functionality and fire-resistant ratings. But sometimes, doors that satisfy all of the needs and that are also environmentally friendly may be required for a certain project. If so, look no further than green star fire doors.

What are Green Star Doors?

An environmentally “conscious” fire door is a door that has been certified by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

It is commonly referred to as a ‘Green Star’ door, even though individual doors are not Green Star rated themselves; only buildings as a whole are given a Green Star rating.

Green Star doors contain an FSC chain of custody regarding their timber or material, meaning they are environmentally friendly fire doors. Their production and manufacture only stem from FSC certified forests and suppliers, or it utilises a recycled material that has also been FSC approved. Green Star is also the most commonly used sustainability rating system for structures and buildings.

Why Choose Green Star Fire Doors?

Green Star Doors are most often employed in building and construction projects (such as Green Star building projects) that require FSC certified products (doors) to be installed. When used in these projects, Green Star fire doors contribute points to the building’s overall Green Star rating.

You can visit the Green Building Council of Australia to view the list of projects and buildings currently Green Star rated.

However, environmentally friendly fire doors can be utilised in any project, regardless of whether you design and construct a Green Star building. This may include projects spanning residential, commercial and public builds.

As an architect, developer or construction company, Green Star fire doors are an excellent way to demonstrate your desire to promote sustainability in the building industry and support environmental awareness. Think of it them not only as environmentally stable but an excellent PR decision.

Tips for Working With Green Star Doors

  • Like many other fire doors, Green Star doors can be fully tailored to meet your fire door needs, including size, thickness, material, finish, opening operations (e.g. sliding doors) and closing devices – these are all still decisions that you will need to make during the design and planning phase of your construction project.
  • If you choose a Green Star door, you should always ensure that it can meet all of your fire-resistant needs and the required BCA approvals (according to AS1905) for your build.
  • Green Star doors are available as both fire-rated doors and non-rated doors and can be customised as 1 hour, 2 hour, 3 hour and 4-hour doors, allowing you to tailor these fire doors to your particular fire needs.
  • If you are particularly keen on going green, you could consider purchasing door frames, hardware or components that also utilise environmentally friendly or recycled materials; however, you will need to make sure that these products remain compliant with BCA codes.
